ZOOMLION GHANA LIMITED COMMISSIONS 1ST OF ITS KIND INTEGRATED RECYCLING AND COMPOST PLANT
Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Africas Waste Management giant had hit yet another milestone in its operation. The first-of-its-kind Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) has been commissioned in Accra as part of efforts to sustainably manage waste generated in the city.
The facility, also known as the Accra Waste Recovery Park and located on the Korle-Bu road, has an 80% waste recovery rate and a capacity to handle 400 tonnes of solid waste on a sixteen (16) hour shift.
The IRECOP will also serve as research and training center for educational institutions.
In a statement read on behalf of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Minister for Business Development, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, said the facility had come at an opportune time considering the overburdened landfill sites in the region.
As leaders in the industry, our wealth of experience has revealed that Waste disposal in Ghana is gradually shifting from dump sites and engineered landfills to value additions through the use of sustainable (socio-economic and environmentally friendly) technologies.
Apart from the environmental benefits, the Plants also have enormous economic benefits in terms of employment generation and provision of raw materials to feed industry. The support of Government is relevant to ensuring that operations become highly successful.
The targeted coverage areas include Mamprobi, Chorkor, Laterbiokorshie, Kantamanto, Agbogbloshie (Old Fadama), James Town, Ussher fort, Graphic Road, Korle Bu, Korle Gono, Ashiedu Keteke which all fall within 5 kilometers radius of the integrated recycling and compost plant. The estimated population within the 5 kilometer radius of the facility is 1,094,994 (AMA, 2019).
Total estimated waste generated by this population using a per capita generation per day for Accra as stated in Miezah et al. (2015) is approximately 809.4 tons a day. This will enable the facility to run its planned two production lines daily at maximum capacity.
It has been observed that, motorized tricycles users prioritize quicker discharge turnaround time over the long distance traveled to discharge waste. Since the facility is located at the heart of town, it will increase its patronage by waste collectors within the 5000 meters radius of the facility.
In pursuit of the partnership arrangement between the public sector and the private waste management operators, we at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, with our strong working philosophy that waste management is more than refuse collection and disposal but more of value addition and material recovery, intend to establish the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRCoP) in all the sixteen (16) regions of Ghana, using state-of-the-art technology.
Addressing the solid waste management challenges in the cities and towns in Ghana is a collective endeavor. The Recycling and Compost Plants will contribute immensely to addressing these challenges at the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
The Jospong Group of Companies, which operates on the working philosophy that waste management is more than refuse collection and disposal, has planned to establish these plants in all the sixteen (16) regions of Ghana, using state-of-the-art technology, the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRCoP)
